Of Pests and Pestilence…

We’ve been fortunate…
So far…
The Gardens haven’t been attacked…
They are new…
Just started…
And have no history with local bugs as a food source…
They don’t harbor residual diseases…
Brought in on commercially grown plants…
But that will change as it becomes established…
And we’ll have to deal with problems…
As they occur…

Hey, what’s this…
A pretty white Butterfly…
Flittin’ about…

First sign o’ Trouble…
She’s feedin’ on nectar now…
But will soon lay her eggs…
On the Kale…

Here they are…
Green Cabbage Worms…
Voracious small caterpillars…
Who will soon grow large…
As they decimate my Kale…

A tipoff to their presence…
Is their droppings…
Called frass…
They eat a lot…
And poop a lot…
When you see it on your Plants…
Along with the chewed on leaves…
Look close and you’ll find…
Your adversary…

Control is easy…
Remove them to a distant place…
Or cut them in half with shears…
They will fall on the ground…
And feed the plants…
Instead of the other way around…

And you may…
Get a li’l Help from your Friends…
In this case…
A Mud Dauber Wasp…
The ones that build those tubular clay Nests…
They love those fat green Worms…
A Tasty Treat for them…
Look carefully and you’ll see…
The wasp has a well camouflaged Worm…
In it’s grasp…

Hey, what’s this…
Another kind of Predator…
Mr. Fox has noticed…
The new Gardens, too..
We’ll have to keep an eye on him…
So he doesn’t develop…
A taste for Tomatoes…
