A Beautiful Sadness…

Usually, this View…

Fills me with Joy and Anticipation…

Comin’ down the ramp to the Beach…

I’m in for a Joyful Time…

Whether it’s Fishin’…

Or, BodySurfin’…

Or just Baskin’ in the Warm Rays…

But Today…

It’s a Somber and Respectful Mission…

It’s a young male Humpback Whale…

His Days ended…

2-4 years old, 31 feet long, and 7 or 8 tons…

A strappin’ Young Feller…

Laid out on the Beach…

Where the Currents had brought him…

And dragged out of Waves’ reach…

By trucks and ropes…

He lays in repose…

Magnificent in his Whaleness…

So, so Sad…

The first reaction…

But then…

The Wonder kicks in…

The Size…

What a Magnificent Being…

The Tail, the Flukes…

The smooth, hard skin…

Like kevlar armor…

Thick blubber…

Exposed where the propeller struck…

The carved wrinkles by the eye…

Did they make the water flow a certain way…

To soothe and clear those eyes…

Whales are smart…

And approach Life much differently…

Than we do…

They’re Smart…

I bet they can fine tune their bodies…

With their Minds…

The Magnificent Eye…

Now forever closed…

What has it seen…

What could it have witnessed…

If allowed a Full Lifespan…

The Hydrodynamics…

How it must Feel…

Gliding through the Sea…

Hard, slick skin underlain with thick, insulating blubber…

Keepin’ his Core, his Soul…

Comfortable in the Elements he navigates…

Is this a similar feeling to the one i have…

Clad in fleece and waterproof shell…

As i wander along the Beach…

In Rain, Snow, cold and wind…

His is a Design…

The finest boat builders can only yearn for…

And it’s not just him…

The biggest Barnacles i’ve ever seen…

Colonize this Cool Creature…

On the tips of his Flukes and under his chin…

They come along for the ride…

But this was their Last One, too…

Such a Beautiful Day…

Down at the Beach today…

High 70s in February…

Life belongs to the Living…

A silent prayer…

R.I.P. Water Brother…

And i pedal away…

No Shirt…

No Shoes…

No Problems…

But much to Ponder as i Cruise…
